Abstract: According to the characteristic that most of the loose matters consolidate to a certain extent, the author studied the effects of the factors on the formation of debris flows, such as ditch grade, crest discharge, saturation resistance to shear and shear area of the loose matters. The discriminants for the loose matters to start are proposed. An application of the proposed method to some ravines along the Chengdu- Kunming railway line is presented.
