Discrimination Character of the Half-Wave Differential Spectrum to the Mandarin Initials and Finals

The response feature of the auditory perception system to the dynamic part of the phonetic speech spectrum is studied, based on which a concept of half-wave differential spectrum is proposed. Then the discrimination character of the half-wave differential spectrum to the Mandarin initials and finals is studied. A group of experiments on the whole Chinese syllables with unparticular persons show that the half-wave differential spectrum can discriminate the initials and finals of Chinese syllables, and that it is a better dynamic representation of speech than the differential spectrum.
